Columbia, SC: On Monday, November 18, 2002, the South Carolina Education Lottery awarded four friends from Spartanburg $100,000 taxes paid for correctly matching all five numbers for Carolina 5.
Glenard Haynes, Mike Green, Norman Pye, and Melvin Plumley, all of Spartanburg, purchased 40 dollars worth of Carolina 5 tickets. One of those forty tickets turned out to be a lucky $100,000 taxes paid winner.
The four friends, who all grew up together, usually purchase Powerball tickets. It was Haynes’ idea to make the switch to Carolina 5. On Saturday, Haynes went to a store to check the winning numbers. After he found out that they had indeed won, he called the other three. “I thought that Glen was lying,” said Pye. “We didn’t believe him at first.”
Believe it or not, the four men walked out of the Columbia Redemption Center with one check for an even $100,000 dollars. The four men plan to split the money evenly. Green will use the money to pay off a few bills. Plumley will use the money towards his full service gas station, Plumley’s located in Spartanburg. Pye plans to buy a new tractor. Haynes stated that he would “buy Powerball tickets!”
The winning ticket was purchased from Alan’s Quick Mart at 209 Floyd Road in Spartanburg.
Since January 2002, the SCEL has returned over $112 million dollars to the State of South Carolina’s Lottery Education Fund. All of SCEL’s net proceeds go to pay for specific educational programs, including South Carolina’s HOPE, LIFE, Palmetto Fellows, National Guard and 2 year institution’s scholarship programs.
