Columbia, SC: On January 22, 2004, South Carolina Education Lottery (SCEL) awarded the owner, Coit McCarter, of Clover Shop and Save in Clover, a check for $50,000. The retailer receives a 1% Selling Bonus for any winning ticket redeemed over $10,000. Selling Bonuses are capped at $50,000.
“My employees will get 10 percent of the money,” McCarter said. “I’ll divide the money evenly between my 11 employees.” McCarter says his employees range from full-time to part-time status. “The lottery has been good to us.”
Since January 7, 2002, Clover Shop and Save has sold $6.4 million in lottery tickets. By law, lottery retailers receive 7% commission on the sale of each ticket.
And this isn’t the first time McCarter has received a Selling Bonus. “We had a $300,000 Powerball winner too,” said McCarter. “They had all the white numbers, but they missed the Powerball. And they paid the extra dollar for Power Played.”
Norman and DeAnna Shue, whose New Year’s Eve Powerball ticket triggered the Selling Bonus, opted for the one-time cash option, of $60.1 million. The state of South Carolina received $4.2 million in state taxes and the Federal Government withheld more than $15 million.
When asked what the Shues plans were with their new found winnings, they answered, “We’re chartering a plane with some of our friends, and we’ll cheer the Panthers to a Super Bowl win! After that, we don’t know.”
