Columbia, SC: On Friday, December 27, 2002, the South Carolina Education Lottery awarded two separate players $100,000 each for correctly matching five out of six winning Powerball numbers in Wednesday’s draw.

Barbara Perkins of Denver, North Carolina purchased her ticket from Riverview Grocery at 1025 Pole Branch Road in Lake Wylie. Because this was her first time purchasing a lottery ticket, she decided to do a quick pick. Perkins plans to pay off bills and “do a little traveling.” The winner stated that the money came at a good time because due to her boss’s death, her job is a little uncertain.

Angela Walden who resides in Campollbello, also matched five out of six winning Powerball numbers. Her winning ticket was purchased from Wilson’s Corner Store at 9390 Highway 9 in Inman. Her ticket was also quick picked. She plans to pay bills and save the money for her children’s education. “I bought the tickets because my husband won on a cruise-slot machine,” she said. “I was feeling a little lucky.”

Since January 2002, the SCEL has returned over $152 million dollars to the State of South Carolina’s Lottery Education Fund. All of SCEL’s net proceeds go to pay for specific educational programs, including South Carolina’s HOPE, LIFE, Palmetto Fellows, National Guard and 2 year institution’s scholarship programs.
