COLUMBIA, SC (August 2, 2012) – When a Greenville man heard on TV a $100,000 lottery ticket had been sold in the Upstate, he thought to himself “that could be cool.”
Then he remembered he had two lottery tickets and for a brief second wondered if maybe, just maybe, he was the winner the reporter was talking about.
The clerk at a local gas station let him know his first ticket wasn’t a winner, but the second ticket was. The clerk couldn’t cash the second ticket because it was worth more than $500, and told him to call the Lottery. A lottery representative broke the news to him.
“I won $100,000?” he kept repeating.
Yes, his Palmetto Cash 5 ticket for the July 30 drawing matched all five numbers drawn (4, 13, 28, 30, and 35) to win the top prize.
“I pinched myself,” he said.
He called his wife and she cried. Then he drove to Columbia to collect his prize.
The winner told lottery officials he plays occasionally. It was his first time in the new Hickory Point location on Hwy 153 in Greenville where he bought the ticket, but he definitely plans to stop there again.
The winner and his wife have decided to keep their plans and identity private.
Had he paid the extra $1 for Power-Up his $100,000 top prize would have doubled to $200,000.
The odds of winning $100,000 playing Palmetto Cash 5 are 1 in 501,942.
For selling the claimed ticket, Hickory Point 153 #11 in Greenville received a commission of $1,000.
