Granddaughter’s Lucky Touch Wins Murrells Inlet Couple $250,000

COLUMBIA, SC (June 12, 2013) – There were hugs all around when a Murrells Inlet couple announced their $250,000 lottery winnings would go towards helping their granddaughter pay for college.

She’s their lucky charm, and last Friday a bit of that luck rubbed off her hands and on to a Mega Millions® ticket her grandfather bought grocery shopping at the local Piggly Wiggly.

“I had her rub the ticket for good luck,” the grandfather said. It worked. The Mega Millions® ticket came within one number of winning Friday night’s jackpot.

They collected their winnings on Monday in Columbia.

“We were going to work in the yard today, but this is better,” said the grandmother, who was the first to check the winning numbers.

“One line – 1, 10, 37, 48, and 55 – jumped out at me,” she said. The Megaball® of 21 was the only number that failed to match.

“It felt pretty good,” said the grandfather, who paid $5 for the ticket with five sets of numbers. Had he spent the extra $1 for the Megaplier®, his $250,000 winnings would have been an automatic $1 million.

There is no sign of disappointment, only a smile on their granddaughter’s face as she rubs her hands together.

For selling the claimed ticket, the Piggly Wiggly #54 in Murrells Inlet received a commission of $2,500.

Since the start of the Lottery in 2002, more than one million college scholarships and grants have been awarded to South Carolina’s students. In all, more than $3 BILLION has been transferred to support educational programs in the Palmetto State.
