COLUMBIA, SC (May 29, 2025) – A Charleston man’s life is a bit different after winning $500,000 playing the Lottery.

“I used to price check in the grocery store, and now I just pick it up and put it in the buggy,” he said. “I get what I want.”

The winner, who does not wish to be identified, told South Carolina Education Lottery officials that he almost passed out when a lottery ticket he bought for $10 at the Rutledge Mart at 759 Rutledge Ave. in Charleston won him a half-a-million dollar prize.

“It’s the best feeling,” he said. “I still can’t believe it.”

Odds of winning $500,000 in the Mining for Gems game are 1 in 1,152,000.  The game is no longer available.

Veerraja LLC (Rutledge Mart) in Charleston received a commission of $5,000 for selling the claimed ticket.
