COLUMBIA, SC (September 20, 2022) – A Texas man, who visited Charleston on the Fourth of July, returned to the Palmetto State recently to cash in a winning Powerball® ticket.
He was surprised to learn the ticket, that he thought was worth closer to $500, was actually worth $100,000.
He found out his prize when he cashed in the ticket at the Lottery’s Claims Center in Columbia. His response to the windfall was summed up in three words.
“Oh,” he said. “Thank You.”
The Powerball® ticket he purchased at the Scotchman #3102 on Johnnie Dodds Blvd. in Mount Pleasant matched four of the first five white ball numbers and the red Powerball® number (15 - 16 - 24 - 31 - 56 and PB: 4) drawn on Monday, July 4. Paying an extra dollar for PowerPlay® doubled his $50,000 winnings to $100,000.
The winner, who did not wish to be identified, called the Independence Day win both “unexpected” and “a gift.”
The odds of winning $50,000 playing Powerball® are 1 in 913,129. The odds of a 2X multiplier being selected are 1 in 1.79 when the jackpot is $150 million or less.
For selling the claimed ticket, Scotchman #3102 in Mount Pleasant received a commission of $1,000.
The estimated jackpot for Wednesday’s Powerball® drawing is $251 million.
