Columbia, SC: Around 11am, August 26, 2002, the South Carolina Education Lottery (SCEL) awarded its first out of four winners in the Carolina 5 100,000 “taxes paid” drawing, held on August 23.
The Hopkins native, who wished to remain anonymous, purchased his winning ticket from the Corner Pantry #111 at 9001 Garners Ferry Rd.
The most recent winner said that he buys $10 worth of Carolina 5 tickets every week, always playing the same number combination. “I’ve played the same numbers since the very first drawing,” he stated.
Saturday morning, the winner bought a paper at a nearby gas station and discovered that he had just won $100,000 taxes paid. “I went and sat in the car for a few minutes and stared at the ticket,” he said. “I still don’t believe it!”
Having just retired, the winner plans to give $10,000 to his church and use the money to pay off bills. The rest of the money will be used in investments. “I’m just a simple man. The money won’t change me,” the winner said as he received his check.
Since January 2002, the SCEL has returned over $92 million dollars to the State of South Carolina’s Lottery Education Fund. All of SCEL’s net proceeds go to pay for specific educational programs, including South Carolina’s HOPE, LIFE, Palmetto Fellows, National Guard and 2 year institution’s scholarship programs.
