COLUMBIA, SC (August 27, 2007) – As summer vacation ends, students are returning to K-12 classrooms with the support of revenues from the South Carolina Education Lottery (SCEL.) This funding supplies school districts across the Palmetto State with the resources, programs and technology necessary for successful learning. Since the start of the Lottery on January 7, 2002, the South Carolina Legislature has appropriated more than $1.73 billion to expand educational opportunities through fiscal year 2007-08.
As of July 16, 2007, K-12 programs have received more than $450 million in appropriations by the Legislature from the Education Lottery Account. This amount includes over $260 million appropriated to K-5 programs, amounting to more than fifty percent of the total lottery monies directed to K-12.
These funds are used for a variety of enhancement programs in reading, writing and social studies. As a result of these lottery-funded resources, school districts are able to purchase new textbooks, supplies, workbooks, other learning tools and computers.
Amazing new advancements in technology are enabling K-12 classrooms to improve student performance in reading, writing and social studies. With lottery-funded appropriations, Lexington County School District Two recently invested in a new resource called an ‘interactive whiteboard.’ These user-friendly projectors show students anything that can be presented on a computer's desktop (such as educational software, websites and maps) and then students interact with the display via a large touch screen. “These whiteboards really help our students get excited and involved in primary education,” said Lexington District Two Assistant Superintendent Wanda Whatley. “The more interested the students are in their classroom studies, the more likely they are to retain the teacher’s lesson.”
Ernie Passailaigue, Executive Director of SCEL, looks forward to continued developments in South Carolina’s educational opportunities. “SCEL proceeds have been appropriated by the South Carolina General Assembly to enhance a variety of educational opportunities for the citizens of the Palmetto State,” said Passailaigue. “Our dedicated staff is driven to meet the expectations of our state’s policy makers, within the boundaries established by the Legislature and the SCEL Commission.”
The SCEL markets fun and entertaining games in a responsible manner. The funds are appropriated by the General Assembly to supplement educational programs. Since start up, more than $1.73 billion in lottery proceeds has been appropriated towards educational programs including K-12 programs, the Endowed Chairs Program at South Carolina’s three research universities, and higher education scholarships.
