A record 14 SCEL Powerball tickets matched five numbers

Columbia, S.C. (April 1, 2005): Sherril Shingler’s first time playing the lottery made a big impression on her – and her pocketbook.

The Bamberg County woman won $500,000 with one of 14 lottery tickets sold in South Carolina that correctly matched five of six Powerball numbers in Wednesday night’s drawing. Of the 14 winning tickets, eight chose the PowerPlay feature for an extra $1, which multiplied their winnings. The PowerPlay number was 5.

Shingler, of Smoakes, ordered Chinese for lunch with her co-workers on Wednesday. A while later, some talked about playing the lottery. Shingler, who had never played asked a co-worker who was going to the store to play the numbers from a Chinese fortune cookie for her. The woman dismissed her request at first, saying Shingler never played.

“I feel lucky today,” was Shingler’s reply. But when her co-worker returned from the store, Shingler simply put the ticket away and forgot about it. That is until the next day when her co-workers urged her to check her ticket. “Sure enough, I had all five numbers,” said Shingler, who plans to pay off her house and put money toward her grandson’s college fund. “The Lord’s looking out for me.”

Shingler, who was joined by husband Larry as she claimed her prize, said she is thankful for winning, although it has yet to sink in. But she now encourages anyone who is skeptical to try their luck for two reasons. No. 1 – Playing helps support education. “And I think that’s a great thing,” she said. No. 2 – They just might win. “Play, play, play,” Shingler said. “I didn’t think I could be winner either.”

As she claimed her prize, Shingler met another $500,000 winner. The Dillon County woman said she also got her winning numbers from a fortune cookie in a Chinese meal she ate Wednesday. Before they parted, the two hugged each other with words of well-wishes and congratulations. While the other woman said she’s not a big fan of Chinese food, Shingler said, “I’m eating a lot of Chinese food from now on.”
