Columbia, SC (March 6, 2006): The year, Governor Mark Sanford proclaimed March 6-12, as Problem Gambling Awareness Week in South Carolina. On Monday, March 6, 2006, the South Carolina Education Lottery (SCEL) along with the Department of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Services (DAODAS) announced local initiatives in support of increased public awareness of the availability and benefits of problem gambling treatment. The joint effort is designed to help educate the public about the warning signs of problem gamblers and where to call to obtain treatment services.

During National Problem Gambling Awareness Week, communities nationwide will strive to raise awareness of both the consequences of problem gambling and the resources available for individuals whose gambling has disrupted their lives. Treatment for problem gambling is available and has proven effective in improving the lives of problem gamblers and their families. This week is also a celebration of the men and women who are overcoming or have overcome problems associated with gambling.

The campaign is geared toward assisting those affected by problem gambling in identifying the problem and accessing professional services. A primary focus of this campaign is to promote the message that treatment works and is available in South Carolina at 1-877-452-5155.

“In order to make a positive impact in the community, we need to be sure that the individuals and families that are in need of professional services know what options are available and how to access them,” said Ernie Passailaigue, SCEL’s Executive Director.

Radio spots and a four-minute public service announcement were also produced by SCEL to highlight the availability of treatment for problem gambling.
