COLUMBIA, SC (September 7, 2011) – Maurice James was headed into the grocery store when she spotted a license plate with the numbers 4 – 4 – 4 and decided those were good lottery numbers. She was so confident, she played them twice.
“I called my sister the next day and asked what numbers were drawn, and she said it was a lousy triple 4,” said James. “I told her maybe lousy to you, but happy for me.”
James, a retired nurse living in Chester, won $1,000. And she’s not alone.
The September 4 evening Pick 3 drawing produced 3,757 South Carolina Education Lottery winners.
Depending on the price paid for the ticket, winners took home either $250 or $500 per play.
The triple number combination put the Lottery in the red for the Sunday evening Pick 3 drawing.
The Pick 3 prize payout was $939,250. Pick 3 sales amounted to just over $213,000 for the draw.
“Pick 3 players certainly have a lot to smile about when triples are drawn,” said Executive Director Paula Harper Bethea. “Triples are by far the most popular combination played by our Pick 3 players. I know our players across the state are very happy, indeed.”
At Jimmy’s Mart in Columbia, clerk Jessica Swindler knows of five or six players pleased with the 4 – 4 – 4 results. She cashed their tickets while working her Labor Day shift. “They were shocked to win,” she told lottery officials.
Big Daddy’s Fireworks on Carowinds Blvd. in Fort Mill sells its fair share of Pick 3 tickets too. The store knows of two or three winners that have come in to collect on the triple 4’s.
“Sunday, I said to myself, tonight’s a good night for a triple,” said Big Daddy’s Fireworks clerk Roger Aiton. “One Superbowl Sunday a triple hit, and it seems they fall around holidays too.”
Aiton is expecting more Pick 3 winners to trickle in over the next couple of days, as are the folks at the nearby Miller’s Produce where about $5,000 has been paid to ticket holders.
Sunday’s drawing marks a repeat performance for those loyal to 4 – 4 – 4. The last set of triples draw by the Lottery was on April 2, and the result was the same, 4 – 4 – 4.
Since the start of the Lottery in 2002, more than 920,000 college scholarships and grants have been awarded to South Carolina’s students. In all, more than $2.5 BILLION has been transferred to support educational programs in the Palmetto State.
