Wedgefield Man Hangs Back with $200,000 Lottery Win

COLUMBIA, SC (February 16, 2012) – A Wedgefield man wasn’t in a hurry to start enjoying his $200,000 lottery winnings.

He waited 65 days to collect the cash.

“I sat on it for a while,” he admitted.

He told lottery officials he checked the Palmetto Cash 5 ticket after the December 9 drawing (12, 15, 17, 22, and 34) to find out he won. Paying the extra $1 for Power-Up doubled his $100,000 winnings to $200,000 when a “2” was drawn.

Content, he put the winning ticket in his safe and kicked back knowing it would be there when he was ready to deal with it.

Christmas and New Year’s came and went. The day before Valentine’s Day he made his move.

“It was one of those things I knew I had to do,” he said when he arrived with the ticket.

“I didn’t want to let it go to waste,” he joked.

The winner, ladies he’s single, is planning to pay off his place and buy a few things he needs, nothing extravagant.

“I’m not going to advertise it,” he said.
The odds of winning $200,000 are 1 in 1,003,884.

Battens in Wedgefield received a commission of $2,000 for selling the claimed ticket.

Since the start of the Lottery in 2002, more than one million college scholarships and grants have been awarded to South Carolina’s students. In all, more than $2.6 BILLION has been transferred to support educational programs in the Palmetto State.
