COLUMBIA, SC (July 16, 2012) – A young man from Cross snapped a picture with his cell phone of his winning lottery ticket and emailed it to his mom and brother. The message read: “Look what I won!”

His $5 lottery ticket was worth $100,000.

“I bought the ticket on the spur of the moment, just for fun,” he said.

He told lottery officials he scratched the Scorchin’ Hot 5’s ticket alone in his car outside the Corner Gas & Tackle on Highway 52 in Moncks Corner, where he purchased the ticket.

He was calm at first. Then his nerves kicked in.

“I slept with the ticket, showered with it, and even took it with me to work,” he said. “I didn’t let it out of my sight.”

He was relieved when he finally had a day off from work to drive to Columbia to collect his prize. His mother came with him.

“This makes you want to play,” she said staring at the check.

The young man left with a down payment on his first home.

As of this release, four top prizes of $100,000 remain in the $5 Scorchin’ Hot 5’s game. The odds of winning $100,000 are 1 in 480,000.

For selling the claimed ticket, Corner Gas & Tackle in Moncks Corner received a commission of $1,000.

Since the start of the Lottery in 2002, more than one million college scholarships and grants have been awarded to South Carolina’s students. In all, more than $2.8 BILLION has been transferred to support educational programs in the Palmetto State.
