COLUMBIA, SC (May 16, 2013) – With no winner last night, the Powerball® jackpot has surged to $475 million, the second largest jackpot in game history.
Chasing the record $587 million jackpot won last November, this jackpot is expected to grow even higher before Saturday night’s drawing as sales boom nationally.
Powerball® sales are brisk all across South Carolina and in the 42 other states along with the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands that offer the Powerball® game.
The cash payout currently stands at $302 million.
It’s been almost four years since South Carolina has sold a jackpot winning ticket. In 2009, Solomon Jackson Jr. won the largest payout in our state’s history, $259 million. Players are hungry for a repeat.
“I’m hoping right along with our players that the $475 million jackpot run stops right here in South Carolina,” said the Lottery’s Executive Director Paula Harper Bethea. “This jackpot is attracting a lot of new players to the game, which we like. We never want to see our existing players buying more tickets.”
“While it’s nice to entertain what the jackpot will afford the winner, it’s important to maintain a sense of perspective. The odds of being the winner of this money are long, about 1 in 176 million,” said Bethea. “We encourage everyone to please, above all else, play responsibly. If you have an extra $2 to buy a ticket, that’s wonderful. If you don’t, then let it go.”
South Carolinians can purchase Powerball® tickets until 9:59 p.m. on Saturday night for the 10:59 p.m. drawing. Powerball® tickets are $2 a piece and are available wherever tickets are sold.
Good luck, South Carolina!
