Powerball® Winner Braves Snow and Ice to Collect $2 MILLION Prize

COLUMBIA, SC (February 11, 2014) – A York couple left home this morning with the snow falling headed to Columbia to deliver a $2 million Powerball® ticket to lottery officials.

The husband whistled when the ticket was scanned and “Congratulations, you are a winner” rang out. It might as well have said, “You’re a millionaire too.”

“That hasn’t hit me yet,” he confessed.

He won last Wednesday, but he didn’t know until Friday morning when he heard on the radio that the Quik Trip #1057 on the Charlotte Hwy. in Clover where he bought a ticket had sold one worth $2 million. The announcement prompted him and his wife check the numbers on the Powerball® ticket he’d stashed in a drawer.

“We were in denial,” said the winner’s wife, who insisted they come today to collect the prize, even though her husband wanted to wait until the weather improved.

“Can you believe we are millionaires, and we didn’t come Monday when the weather was fine because we were worried about going to work,” she said.

The millionaire bought the ticket when he got off work last week and says he plays when the jackpot gets high, buying just one quick pick ticket with PowerPlay®.

“That was the best $3 I ever spent,” he said.

He matched the first five numbers drawn (8, 17, 32, 57, and 59 PB: 24), but wishes he could have matched the red Powerball® number too and won the $215 million jackpot. Even so, the couple’s won enough to pay off everything they owe and then some.

The York winner is South Carolina’s 19th millionaire since the Powerball® game changed two years ago touting bigger jackpots, better odds and more millionaires. Nationwide, the new Powerball® has created over 500 millionaires each year, an average of nine millionaires a week.

Odds of winning $2 million playing Powerball® are 1 in 5 million plus. Spending the extra $1 for PowerPlay® increased the $1 million prize to $2 million.

The Quik Trip #1057 received a commission of $20,000 for selling the claimed ticket.
