“It was weird,” the millionaire said describing the moment he won big at a convenience store in Travelers Rest. “I never expected to win $1 million.”
He says after work he bought a scratch-off for $10 at the Gulf Station of Travelers Rest on Frontage Rd., scanned the ticket on the store’s ticket checker and knew he had something special when the message read “Claim at Lottery.”
“It’s a lot of money,” the winner, who does not wish to be identified, said. His plans are to help his family and stay humble.
Mitul Patel, who owns the Gulf Station of Travelers Rest, feels his luck changed that day too. Before the $1 million win, the largest prize won at his store was $250,000 several years back. He couldn’t be happier.
“I’m telling all of our customers that we sold a $1 million ticket,” he said.
And that news has prompted more folks to try their luck at his store at 11 Frontage Rd.
“That’s the goal,” Patel said. “We want more winners here.”
The Upstate winner overcame odds of 1 in 1,440,000 to win $1 million in the ($10) $1,000,000 Bonus Match game. Three more top prizes remain in the game.
