Irmo Woman Wins Powerball® After Clerk Sells Her the Wrong Ticket

5/13/2022 3:55:31 PM

COLUMBIA, SC (May 13, 2022) – An Irmo woman asked for a Mega Millions® ticket, but the clerk at the Circle K store on St. Andrews Rd. mistakenly gave her a Powerball® ticket instead. The player’s decision to accept the wrong ticket paid off.

She didn’t think about the Powerball® ticket again until her daughter texted that there was a lottery winner in Irmo. Teasing, she texted back “I’m sure it’s me.”

As luck would have it, it was her. The Powerball® ticket won her $250,000.

“I thought this can’t be. I checked the date, the game and the winning numbers over and over,” the winner said. “I’m so grateful.”

She won in the Powerball® drawing on Monday, May 2. Her ticket, a quick pick, matched four of the first five numbers drawn and the Powerball® number to win $50,000 (18, 27, 33, 39, 44 and Powerball® 8). Because she added PowerPlay® for an additional $1, the $50,000 prize increased to $250,000 when a “5” multiplier was drawn.

The winner, who does not wish to be identified, plans to help charities that she regularly supports.

The odds of winning $250,000 playing Powerball® are 1 in 913,129. The odds of a 5X multiplier being selected are 1 in 21.5 when the jackpot is $150 million or less.

For selling the claimed ticket, Circle K Stores #5136 in Irmo received a commission of $2,500.

The estimated jackpot for Saturday’s Powerball® drawing is $83 million.
