Columbia, SC: South Carolina Education Lottery (SCEL) players purchased more than $5.3 million in lottery tickets for last night’s Powerball’s® $165 million estimated jackpot drawing. Since there were no jackpot winners, the new Powerball® jackpot rolled to an estimated $200 million for Saturday night’s draw.
“This is a great start for our new fiscal year,” said Tony Cooper, SCEL’s Chief Operating Officer. “The Board of Economic Advisors (BEA) estimate the lottery will transfer $195 million for the education initiatives outlined by our State Legislators.”
Also, last night, lottery players may have experienced a delay in ticket sales for about an hour. This problem was corrected immediately by the SCEL’s on-line vendor, Scientific Games International based in Alpharetta, Georgia. An internal investigation is being conducted to determine what caused the down time in the computer system.
“We apologize for any delay our customers may have experienced, “said Cooper. “As soon as we can determine the cause, we will inform the public.”
Since January 2002, the SCEL has transferred more than $280 million to the State Education Lottery Account for distribution according to South Carolina Legislation. The SCEL’s net proceeds pay for specific educational programs, including South Carolina’s HOPE, LIFE and Palmetto Fellows Scholarships; the National Guard Scholarship Program; Lottery Tuition Assistance for two-year programs within the state’s university system; a wide range of technical upgrades for state colleges and universities; school buses; local libraries and gambling addiction services.
