Columbia, SC (March 4, 2011): March 6-12 is recognized nationally as “National Problem Gambling Awareness Week.” The South Carolina Education Lottery (SCEL) has designated not just the week but the month of March as “Play Responsibly Month” to highlight gambling awareness to both the public and lottery players.
Since March of 2004, SCEL has partnered with the Department of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Services (DAODAS) providing marketing support for the S.C. Gambling Helpline. The Helpline, as well as the website, PlayResponsiblySC.com, provide South Carolina families affected by problem and compulsive gambling with information on the “hidden addiction” and referrals to local resources for treatment.
The Lottery encourages players to play responsibly year round with conspicuous signage, printed literature at all retail locations, and broadcast of public service announcements. New initiatives by the Lottery to raise public awareness include: electronic billboard messages; quality assurance checks of the Helpline; and social media efforts asking players what responsible play means to them.
If you or someone you know is negatively affected by playing the Lottery, please call the S.C. Gambling Helpline at 1-877-452-5155. Caring professionals are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to take your call. Treatment is effective and confidential.
