COLUMBIA, SC (January 14, 2013) – Christopher Laney had a plan to win the Lottery.
He was going to play his numbers until they won.
The test started in November and meant buying a $2 Powerball® ticket and a $1 Mega Millions® ticket twice a week. He slacked up during the holidays, but the first ticket he bought in the New Year proved his point.
A $250,000 Mega Millions® prize left him speechless.
“I could hardly talk,” he said, trying to explain it all to his mom, who accompanied him to Columbia to collect the winnings last week.
“I thought he was teasing,” she said.
Her son, who she wanted the ladies to know is single, matched the five white ball numbers drawn on January 8 but missed the Megaball® number to win a quarter-of-a- million dollars (3 - 20 - 21 - 38 - 42 MB: 19 / Megaplier: 4).
Laney missed out on $750,000 by not spending the extra $1 for the Megaplier®. Had he, the prize would have been $1 million.
He doesn’t have any regrets and has moved on to his next plan—buying his first home.
For selling the claimed Mega Millions® ticket, Herlong Express in Rock Hill received a commission of $2,500.
The odds of winning $250,000 are 1 in 3,904,701.
Since the start of the Lottery in 2002, more than one million college scholarships and grants have been awarded to South Carolina’s students. In all, more than $2.9 BILLION has been transferred to support educational programs in the Palmetto State.
