COLUMBIA, SC (August 26, 2014) – After finding out he won a $1 million lottery prize, a Summerville man sat down and did his own financial planning.

The result—paying off bills, saving and investing disappointed his wife.

“I was raised to save money and buy the things you need,” he said.

But his wife feels strongly that they should have some fun with their Mega Millions® winnings.

“I wasn’t planning on buying anything,” the winner said.

He checked the Mega Millions ticket at work to find the first five numbers drawn (22, 39, 56, 67 and 71 MB: 15) matched a combination of family numbers, many his wife picked out, to win $1 million last Tuesday.

“My wife has been constantly asking me, ‘When are you going to get it?’” he said.

Yesterday, he cashed in the ticket bought from the Publix supermarket on State Rd.

He told lottery officials he’s waited his whole life for this moment and is prepared.

“I’m not going to change the way I live, though my wife wants to,” he said.

Publix Super Markets Inc. #1266 in Summerville received a commission of $10,000 for selling the claimed ticket.

The odds of winning $1 million are 1 in 18,492,204.

Since the start of the Lottery in 2002, more than one million college scholarships and grants have been awarded to South Carolina’s students. In all, more than $3.4 BILLION has been transferred to support educational programs in the Palmetto State.
