COLUMBIA, SC (June 15, 2011) – Ruby Lester’s Father’s Day gift to her husband, Dale, didn’t cost a penny.
Dale couldn’t be happier or prouder.
All it cost Ruby was time, the time it took her to enter and win Dale a $1,000 Bass Pro Shops® shopping spree.
A friend gave Ruby the idea to win Dale his present by collecting non-winning scratch-off tickets that nobody wanted and entering the tickets online in the South Carolina Education Lottery’s Bass Pro Shops® second-chance promotion.
As luck would have it, Ruby has access to plenty of non-winning tickets.
On weekends Ruby serves up hot dogs and coffee at a business located in Sumter. Some of her customers venture next door to the lottery retailer and buy tickets to scratch. Instead of chunking their tickets, they started handing them over to Ruby.
“She’d come home with a stack of tickets,” said Dale, who works as a painter at Shaw Air Force Base.
“They don’t give me the ones that win,” laughed Ruby.
“They are going to be jealous now,” she added.
Ruby won Dale not one, but two, $500 Bass Pro Shops® gift cards from the Lottery for spending on Father’s Day.
Ruby admits sorting through the scratched tickets for the Bass Pro Shops® tickets was hard work, not to mention messy. She even had to travel to her daughter-in-law’s house to enter the tickets online. But surprising Dale was worth it. Ruby even surprised herself.
“We about had heart attacks when we won,” she said.
Dale recovered quickly and has been flipping through the Bass Pro Shops® catalogue getting ready for his Father’s Day shop-a-thon. An avid fisherman, he’s looking forward to checking out what’s new in the rods and reels department.
“I didn’t know until the other day, but someone told me they sell things for women there too,” mentioned Ruby.
Maybe Dale will pick her up a little something to say “thanks.”
“He has been calling me ‘Lucky 7-11,’” laughed Ruby.
Probably because Ruby had one more surprise for her hubby.
The Lottery met the couple last week to deliver a Bass Pro Shops® camping set. Yes, Ruby’s winning streak continues.
While she was entering the Bass Pro Shops® tickets online, she noticed the Lottery was also holding a Players’ Club promotion for camping gear. Ruby joined the Lottery’s Players’ Club for free, entered the promotion and won.
Her response to the news: “I could almost kiss you.”
“This is fantastic,” she added.
Dale’s using the chairs for Sunday ball games with the family, and he’s sure the grandkids will get a kick out of the tent Ruby won.
“My daughter-in-law entered and wanted the tent,” laughed Ruby. “She’s jealous too.”
The good news for Ruby is one Bass Pro Shops® second-chance drawing remains. The last drawing will award two separate prizes: an adventure trip of a lifetime and a grand prize of $100,000. All entries not drawn in the first two drawings will be eligible for the third and final drawing.
“I’m trying to win the $100,000,” she said.
