SC Education Lottery A Success

1/6/2002 11:00:00 PM

Columbia, SC:  The South Carolina Education Lottery is pleased with the successful launch of the 4 instant ticket games.  “We’ve been in labor for several months”, said SCEL Chief Operating Officer.  “Today we gave birth”.

The Education Lottery launched with over 3,100 retailers selling tickets from an inventory worth more than $20 million dollars. Some of the retailers did experience technical difficulties logging onto the central data system.  “Having a traffic volume of more than 3,100 retailers calling in is a success”, Cooper says.  “But we’re working through this. This is not a show stopper”.

First day tickets sales were well into the millions.  But a more accurate number will be available towards the end of the week.  However, there were some “big” winners cashing in.  Mary Goodwin, from Hamlet, North Carolina drove down to Columbia to collect her $5,000 ticket.  She scratched at the Bennettsville Texaco in Marlboro County.  Mildred Cullum, of Aiken, called the lottery herself to say she’d won $1,000. Michael Bonner, a photographer for The Spartanburg Herald also won a $1,000. And there are many more like them across the state.

Cooper says, “We’re just glad that people are helping our education system and having fun as well”.
