COLUMBIA, SC (September 3, 2008) – This past Labor Day weekend was anything but relaxing for one Rockingham, NC, resident.
Friday night he discovered he held the jackpot winning MegaMatch 6 ticket. Keeping watch over the $1.4 million ticket he tucked away in a money box under his bed was straining.
“I bet I haven’t slept two hours,” he said. “I stayed on fire watch to make sure the house didn’t burn down.”
The Rockingham resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, matched all six numbers in the Friday, August 29 MegaMatch 6 drawing (4-7-12-22-34-35). The ticket was purchased from the McColl Food Pantry in McColl.
His mother first checked the winning numbers and called him with the good news.
“You hit 6 of 6,” his mom said.
The winner, along with his mother, wife, child and uncle traveled to Columbia to claim the prize at lunchtime on Tuesday. His mother and wife still can’t believe this jackpot win has really happened. When his uncle found out he cried.
The winning ticket was worth $1,400,962. The MegaMatch 6 jackpot was a record $1,400,912, and the extra $50 was a result of a combination win on the same ticket.
He plans to save the winnings for retirement and start a college fund for his child. He also mentioned the possibility of a family vacation.
A MegaMatch 6 ticket costs $5 and has three rows of six numbers in each row. Players win by matching four to six numbers in a single row or by matching five or more numbers contained in all three lines for a combination win. Players can win up to three times on one ticket.
