Columbia, SC (May 2, 2008) - Each year the General Assembly appropriates funds from the Education Lottery Account (ELA) to support a wide range of educational initiatives in South Carolina. Many students, families, and educational institutions are benefiting from lottery proceeds. Did you know the General Assembly has appropriated funds from the ELA to South Carolina State University every year since the start of the Lottery?

ELA appropriations provide funds for South Carolina State University to continue its mission to provide affordable and accessible quality undergraduate and graduate degree programs. South Carolina State University Assistant Vice President of Business and Finance Joseph Pearman said, “Lottery appropriations enable S.C. State to maintain a world-class campus and educational environment for students from all walks of life.”

Since 2002, South Carolina State University has received $19 million in ELA appropriations. Founded in 1896, South Carolina State University has grown from a land-grant institution to one of the state’s leading higher education institutions offering the only undergraduate Nuclear Engineering Program in the state. Today, more than 5,000 students study at its campus located in Orangeburg, S.C.

ELA appropriations are deposited into South Carolina State University’s Educational and General Accounts. The University has dedicated the use of these funds to correct deferred maintenance problems on the historic campus. The following list is a small sample of the more than 25 expansive projects supported by ELA appropriations: Dukes Gym wheelchair lift project and roof replacement; campus-wide security cameras and extended campus lighting; multiple projects on Oliver C. Dawson Bulldog Stadium; elevator repair in student residence buildings; maintenance and repairs to academic buildings; and roof replacement to WSSB-FM radio station owned and operated by the University.

The South Carolina Education Lottery supports education in the Palmetto State. For more information on the South Carolina Education Lottery and where the money goes, visit www.sceducationlottery.com.
