SCEL urges Powerball® players to play responsibly!

Columbia, SC (September 29, 2005): More than 52,000 South Carolina Education Lottery (SCEL) Powerball® players won in Wednesday night’s drawing. The winners include a match five ticket worth $200,000, bought at the Publix Super Markets #506 in Aiken. As of yet, no one has come forward to claim the match five ticket.

The winning Powerball® numbers were: 7, 22, 27, 48, and 50. The Powerball® was 17. And the PowerPlay® number was 2. Nationwide, no one correctly matched all six numbers to win Wednesday night’s jackpot estimated at $148 million. Therefore, Saturday’s jackpot is estimated at $167 million.

“A lot people play when the jackpot reaches their magical number,” said Tony Cooper, SCEL’s Chief Operating Officer. “The odds remain the same—long. Players must play responsibly.”

At the height of sales for Wednesday’s draw, SCEL officials say sales reached nearly $3,000 per minute. However, this is not a record. The record was set back in December 2002, when the Powerball® jackpot was estimated at $314 million. SCEL tickets sales were nearly $10,000 per minute according to Scientific Games International, SCEL’s online vendor.

In August, Powerball® changed the game by increasing to the amount of the starting jackpot, from $10 million to $15 million! Jackpots grow faster, increasing by a minimum of $5 million per draw. The annuity option changed so that grand prize winners receive an annual payment that increases each year. Winners can also elect the jackpot’s one time lump-sum option.

Another added feature to the game included doubling the second prize for matching five white ball numbers, from $100,000 to $200,000 cash! With the purchase of the PowerPlay® option, players will have the opportunity to multiply their winnings by up to five to win up to $1 million!

Also, Powerball® players who match four white ball numbers plus the red Powerball® number will double their prize from $5,000 to $10,000! With the purchase of the PowerPlay® option, players will have the opportunity to multiply their winnings by up to five to win up to $50,000! Players can win by matching as few as one number.
