Dillon woman claims $500,000 share of Powerball wi

A record 14 SCEL Powerball tickets matched five numbers

Columbia, S.C. (April 1, 2005): Shirley Greer, of Dillon, says she’s not the type of person to smile a lot. But she certainly has a lot to smile about these days.

Greer was the lucky recipient of one of 14 lottery tickets that correctly matched five of six Powerball numbers in Wednesday night’s drawing. Of the 14 winning tickets, eight chose the PowerPlay feature for an extra $1, which multiplied their winnings. The PowerPlay number was 5. Greer was one of the eight to win $500,000.

“It feels like a dream,” she said Thursday as she claimed her prize. “It’s a good feeling.”

Greer, who was accompanied to Columbia by her sister, brother and cousin, got her lucky numbers from a Wednesday meal. She ordered Chinese food, and one of the fortune cookies listed “lucky numbers.”

“And they were,” said Greer, who plans to use her winnings to pay off her house, save some and just enjoy. She also plans to “pass the blessing on” by helping others.

As she claimed her prize, Greer met another $500,000 winner. The Bamberg County woman said she also got her winning numbers from a fortune cookie in a Chinese meal she ordered for lunch Wednesday. Before they parted, the two hugged each other with words of well-wishes and congratulations.
