Columbia, SC (September 2, 2004): The South Carolina Education Lottery (SCEL) will affiliate with the SC Department of Natural Resources and the National Weather Service in an effort to notify the public of hazardous weather conditions. This information will be distributed throughout the SCEL’s 3,500 retailer network within minuets of being reported.

“Our lottery terminals allow us to issue weather alerts to public should hazardous conditions threaten our area,” said Tony Cooper, SCEL’s Chief Operating Officer. “The use of the terminal will direct lottery players and customers to read a more detailed report of the alert posted at the retail location.”

This is the same system SCEL has used in the past to issue a SC AMBER Alert. Through this program, SCEL will provide an invaluable service to South Carolina at no cost to the state.

Here’s how the program will work:

- Once an alert has been issued by the Governor’s Office via the Governor’s Order of Evacuation, SCEL will utilize its lottery terminals to send out an instant alert message on its Customer Display Unit (CDU)
(Example: Emergency Weather Alert- SEE POSTED MESSAGE)

- The use of the CDU will simply direct players and store customers to read a more detailed report form of the alert posted at the retail location.

- The use of the CDU will also be used to direct retailer to unplug terminals and to store ticket and paper stock in a secure location.
