Columbia, SC (September 1, 2004): The South Carolina Education Lottery (SCEL) and the Greenville Growl are teaming up with the Mr. Hollandís Opus Foundation to support music education in South Carolina. According to the Mr. Hollandís Opus Foundation, on average, students who participate in music programs have higher grades, less behavioral problems, less drug use, better attendance records and, in general, succeed more than students not involved with music education.

Unfortunately, despite the proven positive impact of music education on a childís life, school and community music programs are increasingly being discontinued or severely scaled back due to budgetary restraints.

ďWe know that education is instrumental,Ē said Ernie Passailaigue, SCELís Executive Director. ďWhether it is lottery scholarships or K-5 enhancements, by supporting programs such as this, we are helping educate our children. It is my hope that this partnership can encourage schools and the community to get behind the arts.Ē

Through SCELís partnership with the Greenville Growl and the Center Ice Charities, the Growl is donating $6,050 to the Foundation on the lotteryís behalf. The mission of the Foundation is to put instruments in the hands of children through programs and partnerships with music retailers, instrument manufacturers, local businesses and schools.

South Carolina music teachers are encouraged to apply for a grant to receive musical instruments through the Mr. Hollandís Opus Foundation. You can find an application on their website: www.mhopus.org. Click on Apply for Grant, and then click on The Melody Program which targets K-12 school music programs. Teachers may download and complete an application for a grant and mail it to the following address:

The Mr. Hollandís Opus Foundation 15125 Ventura Boulevard, Suite 204 Sherman Oaks, CA 91403 Attn: Grant Committee

The deadline for mailing in your schoolís application is Wednesday, September 15, 2004. Winners of the grant will be announced once they are awarded.

Join SCEL, the Mr. Hollandís Opus Foundation, and the Greenville Growl on October 14, 2004 at the Pepsi Grandstand at the South Carolina State Fair in Columbia. The Lottery will be giving away the $1 million grand prize for the Carolina Millionaire Summer Promotion plus nine, all-expenses paid trips to the Caribbean. One lucky audience member will receive an additional all-expenses paid trip to the Caribbean just for bringing a non-winning Carolina Payout ticket and being present in the audience at the time of the drawing.

At the event, the Mr. Hollandís Opus Foundation and the Greenville Growl will also be presenting grants to South Carolina Schools as part of their Education is Instrumental partnership with SCEL.
