WINNER CLAIMS $65.8 POWERBALLŪ JACKPOT!
7/2/2004

Columbia, SC: The South Carolina Education Lottery (SCEL) is pleased to announce the claiming of the $65.8 million PowerballŪ Jackpot prize.

A North Carolina woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, presented the winning ticket at the Columbia Claims Center earlier today.

The winner decided to purchase her tickets while driving back from Atlanta and seeing a PowerballŪ billboard. The winner had never played Powerball before, but something made her stop and try her luck. The feeling was so strong, in fact, that she stopped two more times during her trip home to purchase more tickets. Turns out all the extra stops were not necessary as the very first ticket she ever bought turned out to be the winner!

The winner has decided to take the one time cash payout of $34,231,030.84 before taxes verses the $65.8 million advertised annuity.

For additional information about the winner, please contact Cathy Rudisill of Smith Moore LLP at (919) 755-8700.

The winning ticket was purchased at the Spinx located at 6425 Hwy 24 in Townville, SC. For selling the winning ticket, Spinx will receive a $50,000 selling bonus.

This PowerballŪ Jackpot win marks the third jackpot win for SCEL players in less than two years. The first win was worth $88.7 million and was claimed by the Wilsons of Charlotte, NC on May 8, 2003. The second win was worth $110.75 million and was claimed by the Shues of Concord, NC on January 2, 2004. Both winners selected the one time cash payout instead of the advertised annuity.

Since January 2002, the SCEL has transferred more than $571 million to the State Education Lottery Account for distribution according to South Carolina Legislation.
