SCEL celebrates 2nd Anniversary

The new year will feature the faces of the SCEL

Columbia, SC: January 7, 2004 will mark the second anniversary of the South Carolina Education Lottery (SCEL). To commemorate another record-breaking year, the SCEL will launch a series of testimonials from lottery-funded scholarship recipients. The television and radio spots, along with newspaper ads will premier at a series of news conferences across the state on January 7.

The news conferences will take place simultaneously at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 7, 2004 at the following locations:

Columbia: 1333 Main Street, SCEL Draw Studios
Mt. Pleasant: 537 Long Point Road, Suite 106
Greenville: 18 Augusta Road

The lottery will also launch its jingle, “Just Plain Fun,” performed by the Columbia-based musical group, The Jeffery Singers. A live performance will take place at the Columbia news conference.

The general public is invited to attend.

Sine the SCEL began selling instant lottery tickets a year ago, more than $429 million have been applied to education in South Carolina.

“More than 100,000 students in South Carolina are attending college with funds supported by the lottery,” stated Ernie Passailaigue, SCEL’s Executive Director. “This is what the Education Lottery is all about.”

To help celebrate the second anniversary, players can bring in two non-winning lottery tickets to any lottery claims office on January 7, 2004 and receive a t-shirt, while supplies last.

In the second year:

- The SCEL launched at least 36 different scratch-offs and Pick 4

- Lottery players have won nearly $871 million in prizes in January 2002

- Two Powerball Jackpot winners: The Wilsons (May 2003) and The Shues (December 2003)

- The SCEL launched a second draw day for Carolina 5

- The SCEL partners with AMBER Alert
