YORK COUNTY RETAILER SELLS WINNING POWERBALL® TICK
1/1/2004

Columbia, SC: A South Carolina Education Lottery (SCEL) player rung in the New Year as a multi-millionaire. SCEL computer records show, someone correctly matched the winning numbers to the New Year’s Eve Powerball® drawing worth $221.5 million, higher than the advertised jackpot of $210 million.

The winning ticket was sold at the Clover Shop and Save, 927 North Main Street, Clover. A news conference is schedule at the store location today at 12:30 p.m.

The winning numbers from the December 31, 2003 drawing were: 5, 7, 18, 28, and 35. The Powerball® was 1. The PowerPlay multiplier was (3).

The Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL), the group that operates Powerball®, also notes, a winning Powerball® ticket was sold in Pennsylvania. Since there were two winning tickets, the jackpot amount will be split equally between them. Each winning ticket is valued at over $110 million.

The winners will now have to decide if they want a 29-year, 30-payment annuity or the cash option worth $60.1 million each. They have 60 days after their ticket is validated to make that decision.

There were more winners in South Carolina. 161,585 people in South Carolina won prizes ranging from $3 to $100,000. Included are two winning tickets worth $100,000!

The $221.5 million jackpot ranks as the 5th largest Powerball® jackpot ever, and the 7th largest lottery jackpot all-time.

SCEL offices will be closed on New Year’s Day. Lottery offices will be open on Friday, January 2, 2004.
