STRONG SALES PUSH POWERBALL JACKPOT ESTIMATE TO $2
7/8/2003

Columbia, SC: The state lottery directors that sell the Powerball game have issued a new estimated jackpot after finding that the current estimate of $240 million is likely to be surpassed.

Besides being the largest lottery jackpot currently offered in the world, the new estimate of $250 million is also the fourth largest Powerball jackpot ever offered. The estimated cash option for the drawing will be $141 million.

The current run began on Saturday, May 10 after Anthony and Monica Wilson of Charlotte, North Carolina hit the $88 million Powerball jackpot in South Carolina.

Powerball has had 9,767,422 (9.7 million) winners nationwide during this run who have been paid a total of approximately $68 million in cash prizes.

South Carolina Education Lottery (SCEL) officials urge everyone to play responsibly. The odds of winning the top prize in Powerball is 1:120,526,770.

Since January 2002, the SCEL has transferred more than $280 million to the State Education Lottery Account for distribution according to South Carolina Legislation. The SCEL’s net proceeds pay for specific educational programs, including South Carolina’s HOPE, LIFE and Palmetto Fellows Scholarships; the National Guard Scholarship Program; Lottery Tuition Assistance for two-year programs within the state’s university system; a wide range of technical upgrades for state colleges and universities; school buses; local libraries and gambling addiction services.
