SCEL Announces First Powerball Jackpot Winner

Winning Couple’s Ticket Worth $88.7 Million Dollars

>COLUMBIA, S.C. – Today marked one of the most important days in the history of the South Carolina Education Lottery (SCEL). Anthony Wilson, 38, and his wife Monica, 36, walked into the Columbia Claims Center with a winning Powerball ticket worth $88.7 million dollars!

The Wilsons, residents of Charlotte, N.C., are the first South Carolina Powerball Jackpot winners! “It’s a whole new world,” Mr. Wilson stated.

Mr. Wilson, who works in Columbia, was on his way home on Wednesday and decided to purchase 60 quick pick tickets at Red Rockets Fireworks in Fort Mill. “I passed the gas station, and decided to turn back around to get some tickets,” Wilson said. “I actually felt like the guy ahead of me had a lucky ticket.”

That decision changed his life forever. Although Wilson kept his tickets, he did not watch the drawing last night and didn’t find out he was the luckiest man in South Carolina until he arrived at work today.

“After being married for two years, we are going to take a vacation,” Mr. Wilson stated. “And work on some additions to our family.” The couple has a 16 year daughter and a 12 year old son. They also have plans to move their residence to South Carolina.

Since January 2002, the SCEL has transferred more than $243 million to the State Education Lottery Account for distribution according to South Carolina Legislation. The SCEL’s net proceeds pay for specific educational programs, including South Carolina’s HOPE, LIFE and Palmetto Fellows scholarships; the National Guard Scholarship Program; Lottery Tuition Assistance for two-year programs within the state’s university system; a wide range of technical upgrades for state colleges and universities; school buses; local libraries and gambling addiction services.
