4/21/2003

Columbia, SC: On Monday, April 14, 2003, the South Carolina Education Lottery (SCEL) transferred $18 million into the Education Lottery Account (ELA). To date, the SCEL has transferred nearly $163 million this fiscal year.

“We are just $9 million away from meeting the estimate set by the Board of Economic Advisors,” said Ernie Passailaigue, SCEL’s executive director. “The lottery is on track to meet the financial expectations set by the state to improve our educational system.”

Each month the SCEL is required to turn over the net proceeds of the previous month’s sales. The Board of Economic Advisors has forecasted the SCEL to transfer $172 million to the ELA this fiscal year.

Since January 2002, the SCEL has returned more than $243 million to the State of South Carolina’s Lottery Education Fund. All of the SCEL’s net proceeds go toward specific educational programs, including South Carolina’s HOPE, LIFE and Palmetto Fellows scholarships; the National Guard; Lottery Tuition Assistance for two-year programs within the state’s university system; a wide range of technical upgrades for state colleges and universities; school buses; local libraries and gambling addiction services.
