22 Employees pool together to win $500,000
12/23/2002

Columbia, SC: On Monday, December 23, 2002, the South Carolina Education Lottery (SCEL) awarded $500,000 to a group of employees for correctly matching five out six winning Powerball numbers on Saturday’s draw.

22 employees at Town & Country Toyota, Charlotte NC contributed $5 dollars each and an additional $35 dollars worth of previous winnings to buy $146 dollars worth of Powerball tickets. Employee David Hamilton was put in charge of buying the tickets.

“I go to the store on my way home from work,” Hamilton said. “I told my co-workers about it and we decided to play.”

Hamilton, of Rock Hill, watched the news Saturday night to check the winning numbers.

“I knew that we’d won. But I didn’t know what the multiplier was.” Because the group purchased Power Play for an additional dollar, their original winnings were multiplied to $500,000 dollars. “We went on the Internet and saw that the Power Play number was 5. We can’t believe it!”

Believe it or not, the group of 22 will split $500,000 amongst themselves. When asked what their winnings would be used for, most agreed that they would use the money to pay bills and for an extra special Christmas.

The winning ticket was purchased from Red Rocket Fireworks at 116 Porter Road, in Rock Hill.

Since January 2002, the SCEL has returned over $151 million dollars to the State of South Carolina’s Lottery Education Fund. All of SCEL’s net proceeds go to pay for specific educational programs, including South Carolina’s HOPE, LIFE, Palmetto Fellows, National Guard; Lottery Tuition Assistance for 2 year programs within the state’s university system; a wide range of technical upgrades for state colleges and universities; school buses; local libraries and gambling addiction.
