SCEL looks for Carolina 5 Winner

Columbia, SC: Wanted. The South Carolina Education Lottery (SCEL) is looking for the Carolina 5, $100,000 taxes paid, winner from the July 26, 2002 drawing. There were two $100,000 taxes paid winners. The winning tickets were purchased in Sumter and Rock Hill.

The person, who purchased their winning ticket from the Piggly Wiggly on 1011 Broad Street in Sumter, has not come forward to claim their prize.

On Monday, July 29, 2002, Patricia Hustis came forth to claim her $100,000. She purchased her winning Carolina 5 ticket at Elliot’s Exxon on Cherry Hill Road in Rock Hill. Hustis chose her Carolina 5 winning numbers using her 5 grandchildren’s birthdates. She found out she was a winner on that Saturday, her 48th birthday.

The person holding the winning Carolina 5 ticket has 180 days after the drawing to claim their prize. The last day to validate the ticket is January 21, 2003.

In its first six months, the SCEL has returned over $80 million dollars to the state of South Carolina for education. All SCEL profits go to pay for specific educational programs. These include South Carolina’s HOPE, LIFE, Palmetto Fellows, National Guard scholarship programs; Lottery Tuition Assistance for 2 year programs within the state’s university system; a wide range of technical upgrades for state colleges and universities; school buses; local libraries and gambling addiction.
