Mega Millions® Jackpot Drawing Tonight for $449 Million
7/5/2016 10:05:59 AM

COLUMBIA, SC (July 5, 2016) – 2016 is a year of big jackpots, with a $449 million Mega Millions® jackpot currently in the mix.

The winning numbers for the third largest jackpot in game history will be drawn tonight at 11 p.m. Lottery officials in South Carolina are seeing brisk ticket sales.

“A lot of players will be buying their first Mega Millions® ticket today,” said the Lottery’s Executive Director Paula Harper Bethea. “We want to urge those new to the game and our loyal players to please, play responsibly.”

The odds of winning it all are long, about 1 in 259 million.

“At the end of the day, when the jackpot excitement has passed, the real winner here is education. The Lottery was established with the sole purpose to generate revenue to underpin education, and we have committed $4 billion to the State. This jackpot run will allow us to transfer even more,” added Bethea.

Should South Carolina sell the coveted $449 million golden ticket tonight, the State will win with the 7 percent state tax owed on the winnings. The federal government keeps 25 percent.

South Carolina has yet to produce a Mega Millions jackpot win. If it happens tonight, the winner has the option to take a $313 million cash payout or the annuity, which is paid out in one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments. Each payment is 5 percent bigger than the previous one.

If there is no winner, the jackpot will roll and could ultimately rival the record $656 million reached in December of 2012. If its hit, attention shifts to Wednesday night’s Powerball® jackpot drawing for an estimated $257 million.

South Carolinians can purchase Mega Millions® tickets until 10 tonight for the 11 p.m. drawing. Mega Millions® tickets are $1 and available wherever tickets are sold.

Good luck, South Carolina!
