Darlington High School Teacher Wins $50,000 in Lottery

COLUMBIA, SC (March 23, 2016) – A teacher at Darlington High School has won $50,000 playing the South Carolina Education Lottery.

Cadmar Wingate, who teaches automotive technology and helps manage the busses, will be late for work today.

This morning he drove to Columbia to cash in a winning Jumbo Bucks scratch-off.

He says he bought the ticket yesterday at City Food on N. Main St. in Darlington. He was waiting in line and watched as the customer ahead of him picked out several lottery tickets. When it was his turn, Wingate, who rarely buys a ticket, decided to try his luck and picked out a ticket for $2.

“I said ‘Give me that green one,’” he told lottery officials while awaiting the check for his winnings. “I laid the ticket on the table at home and forget about it for a couple of hours.”

When he finally scratched the ticket, the result brought a smile to his face.

“I’m rarely that lucky,” Wingate said.

He says he hardly slept last night thinking about the win and being debt free.

“It’s exciting,” he said. “I’m sure the news is spreading at work that I won.”

Two top prizes of $50,000 remain in the $2 Jumbo Bucks game, at odds of 1 in 600,000.

For selling the claimed ticket, City Food in Darlington received a commission of $500.
