Education Lottery’s Message to SC Powerball® Players
1/13/2016 2:14:23 PM

COLUMBIA, SC (January 13, 2016) – A world record jackpot drawing takes place tonight, and the Lottery has a message for those looking to win the $1.5 billion prize.

“It only takes one ticket,” said the SC Education Lottery’s Executive Director Paula Harper Bethea.

South Carolina winner Solomon Jackson is proof of that. In 2009 he purchased a single ticket for $2 in Columbia and won a $259 million Powerball® jackpot. The year before that, 19-year-old Jonathan Vargas bought his first Powerball® ticket to win $35 million.

“So if you have an extra $2, go ahead and buy a ticket. But this is not the time to spend foolishly or overindulge,” warned Bethea. “Don’t spend your paycheck! Play smart. Play in moderation. And please, play responsibly.”

Consider the odds of winning first. To win, you must overcome odds of about 1 in 293 million.

And the odds are the same for every ticket.

If you want to take a chance on tonight’s drawing, you must purchase your tickets by 9:59 p.m. for the 10:59 p.m. drawing.

Good luck, South Carolina. Please, play responsibly.
