COLUMBIA, SC (September 10, 2015) – A couple from Summerville is the South Carolina Education Lottery’s first $25,000 a year for LIFE winner in the Lucky for Life game.

“This is the first thing we’ve ever won,” said the couple yesterday when they cashed in their winning ticket.

The husband says he buys a lottery ticket about once a week and while his wife was grocery shopping decided to have his Lucky for Life ticket for Monday’s Labor Day drawing checked. His wife says she was surprised to find her husband at the customer service counter with a grocery store employee screaming and hugging him.

“You’re kidding,” she said when she learned their ticket was a winner.

The couple matched the first five numbers drawn 16, 17, 21, 32 and 36 but missed the Lucky Ball number “7” in Monday’s drawing. The winners had to decide between $25,000 a year for life or a one-time cash payment of $390,000. They chose to take the $390,000.

Retired, the couple hasn’t told their kids about the win, but says they will one day. For now, they’re going to enjoy their good luck and invest the cash.

The odds of winning $25,000 a year for life are 1 in 1,813,028.

For selling the winning Lucky for Life ticket, the Circle K #2122 at 1101 Central Avenue in Summerville received a $3,900 commission once it was claimed.

Lucky for Life is a multi-state game offered in 16 states. Tickets cost $2 with drawings on Mondays and Thursdays. South Carolina began selling Lucky for Life tickets in January. In addition to the $25,000 a year for life prize, players can also win $1,000 a day for life.
