COLUMBIA, SC (January 21, 2014) – Powerball® is turning back the clock by restoring the game’s popular PowerPlay® multipliers.
Starting with tomorrow night’s drawing, players spending the extra $1 for PowerPlay® will once again see non-jackpot prizes, excluding the Match 5 prize, multiplied by 2, 3, 4, or 5 depending upon the multiplier number selected.
The move is welcome news to players that admittedly missed the excitement of seeing their winnings multiplied when the PowerPlay® option was redesigned in favor of set prize amount in January of 2012.
That is when the cost to play Powerball® doubled to $2, and a ticket with PowerPlay® ran $3. The subsequent changes paid off, delivering bigger jackpots, better odds and more millionaires, but leaving PowerPlay® players a bit nostalgic.
Powerball® is reversing the decision, and now instead of winning a $200 prize with PowerPlay®, players could win up to $500. A $50,000 prize is possible for PowerPlay® players matching four white ball numbers and the red Powerball® when a “5” multiplier is selected, an increase of $10,000.
An automatic $2 million prize for matching five white ball numbers with the purchase of PowerPlay®, regardless of the PowerPlay® number selected, remains unchanged.
“Powerball® is incredibly responsive to its players, and felt restoring PowerPlay® to its original form was good for players and the game,” said Lottery Executive Director Paula Harper Bethea. “South Carolina has a strong PowerPlay® following, and I anticipate our players will be pleased with new product.”
