COLUMBIA, SC (January 9, 2014) – When Beth Wood’s Facebook friends read her post that she’d won the Lottery, congratulations, advice, and ideas for spending the $75,000 flooded the Aiken resident’s social media page.
“It’s a new start,” said Wood, excited about the possibilities she and her husband now have.
While her husband is still shaking his head over his wife’s decision to announce the win on Facebook, he admits he saw the win coming.
The couple told lottery officials how over the course of a few weeks, Wood won $50 twice on Platinum Crossword tickets her husband gave her. She then bought one of the $3 tickets and won $30 and then picked out the $75,000 winner.
“Every one of those crossword tickets she touched was a winner,” said her husband.
She says the Lottery’s crossword game is the only crossword puzzle she’s ever been any good at.
“It was just my time,” she figures.
Odds of winning the remaining top prize of $75,000 in the $3 Platinum Crossword game are 1 in 432,000.
For selling the claimed winning ticket, Airport Shell in Aiken received a commission of $750.
Since the start of the Lottery in 2002, more than one million college scholarships and grants have been awarded to South Carolina’s students. In all, more than $3.2 BILLION has been transferred to support educational programs in the Palmetto State.
