COLUMBIA, SC (July 12, 2013) – The South Carolina Education Lottery (SCEL) has had a successful year for education in the Palmetto State. It’s been a year filled with milestones.

With the support of its retailers and players, this is the best year for transfers to education in seven years. Deposits to the Education Lottery Account for FY 2012-13 amounted to $300 million, the best since FY 2006 and totaling $3.1 BILLON since the start of the Lottery in 2002. This funding helps provide scholarships and grants, buses for grade school students, books and technology at local libraries and other educational opportunities for South Carolinians.

Lottery sales in FY 2012-13 totaled $1.2 billion resulting in the best sales year on record. High Powerball® jackpots helped drive sales as did facelifts to the Jumbo Bucks instant ticket family and increased top prizes for Carolina Riches and Giant Jumbo Bucks. Overall, 73 instant games were launched compared to 69 in FY 2011-12.

FY 2013 included a new partnership for the Education Lottery with NASCAR and the Darlington Raceway! A few famous faces even stopped by the SCEL offices. Race car driver Ricky Stenhouse Jr. made a special guest appearance with the Lottery at a press conference to launch the instant ticket FAN-tastic! in partnership with NASCAR and Darlington. And, NFL and former Gamecock football player Marcus Lattimore helped the Lottery express the importance of playing responsibly in commercials with Executive Director Paula Harper Bethea.

“The Lottery ends a very successful year as a direct result of our employees, our vendors and our retailers all working hard and with a commitment to excellence,” said Executive Director Paula Harper Bethea. “When partnered with the support of our lottery customers, it’s a team that’s hard to beat.”

Not only was it a successful year for the Lottery, but for its players as well. Lottery customers took home $775.5 million in prizes this fiscal year. That’s up $54.1 million compared to the prior year.

With FY 2012-13 in the books, the South Carolina Education Lottery is already looking to the future. As the Lottery begins its 12th year, new tickets, games and promotions are being planned to ensure continued funding for education. The partnership of customers, retailers and employees makes the South Carolina Education Lottery a winning team.

Proceeds from every dollar spent by players on the South Carolina Education Lottery are returned to the state in the form of funding for education, prizes, retailer commissions, and payment to contractors for goods and services.
