COLUMBIA, SC (April 17, 2013) – A Jonesville man called his wife Tuesday morning with good news.
“I just won $1 million,” he told her.
He left home that morning for Newberry on business when he stopped for a soda and a lottery ticket at the Around the Clock BP on Hwy. 34 in Newberry.
The Money Money Millionaire ticket he scratched interrupted his wife’s sleep. She hung up the phone, got up and on the road to Newberry to meet him.
“The whole way there I was thinking he’d better not be playing a joke on me,” she said to lottery officials. “He was so calm.”
An hour later she pulled up in her car, and the smile on his face told her she was looking at a millionaire.
He handed her the ticket. Having never held $1 million before, she snapped a picture of it with her cell phone.
He held the ticket while she drove them to Columbia to collect the winnings.
“We’re paying off the house first,” she told lottery officials slipping on her glasses to take a good look at her husband’s check.
“I see all those zeroes,” she said shaking her head.
“I’m going to stretch it as far as it will go,” the millionaire said still smiling.
The Jonesville man is the third $1 million winner in the Money Money Millionaire game. A Travelers Rest woman and a Greer woman won prior, all beating the ticket’s 1 in 1.5 million odds. One $1 million prize is left to be won in the game.
For selling the claimed ticket, the Around the Clock BP received a commission of $10,000.
