SCEL to award its highest payout ever: $100,000
4/10/2002

Columbia, SC: The South Carolina Education Lottery (SCEL) will award its $100,000 Carolina Riches grand prize winner on Monday, April 15, 2002 at the SCEL’s Studio on 1333 Main Street in downtown Columbia at 7 p.m.

Festivities will begin at 5 p.m., when the finalists arrive in a stretch Cadillac Escalade Limousine to the studio site. A blanket of red carpet will await them. Entertainment will be provided by the Atlantic Coastline Band, based in Columbia.

To date, 17 have qualified for the drawing by purchasing a Carolina Riches “GP” scratch ticket. The maximum number of qualifiers is 20.

The emcee for the Grand Prize drawing will be the SCEL’s very own, George Godfrey of Columbia, one of eight who conduct the nightly Pick 3 drawing.

The winner will be chosen by a process of elimination. Initially, the contestants will be called on to choose a bag that contains a number. That number will correspond to a ball. The balls will then be placed in a draw machine. Once all of the contestants have chosen their bag, the balls will mix in the drawn machine.

The contestant whose number corresponds to the first ball drawn will win $10,000. This procedure will be repeated until there are two balls and two contestants remaining. The next ball drawn will signify the $100,000 grand prize winner. The ball not selected will win $25,000.

The final drawing will be televised live on the SCEL’s draw stations: WLTX in Columbia, WSPA in Spartanburg, WCBD in Charleston and WPED/WWMB in Florence/Myrtle Beach.
