11 Years of Supporting Students of the Palmetto State

Columbia, SC (January 7, 2013) – On a cold January day eleven years ago today, the first four instant lottery tickets went on sale at retailers across the Palmetto State. Since then, the Lottery has released more than 575 instant tickets and added the online games Pick 3, Pick 4, Palmetto Cash 5, Powerball® and Mega Millions®. For eleven years now, the Lottery has had a positive impact on the State’s economy as well as empowered citizens through educational enhancement.

The General Assembly has appropriated more than $3.1 BILLION in lottery net proceeds to support education in South Carolina. This includes $2.3 BILLION for higher educational programs, which have provided more than 1.1 MILLION scholarships and grants awarded to South Carolina’s students. Lottery funds support six different scholarships and grants, including Lottery Tuition Assistance, a program available to full-time or part-time technical college students of any age who meet the requirements.

Lottery proceeds benefit education at all levels. Public school grades K-12 have received $687 million in appropriations. This includes the purchase of more than 540 school buses. And don’t forget community education. More than $84 million has been directed to community education programs including funding for county libraries, the South Carolina Department of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Services to provide gambling addiction services, and the Allied Healthcare Initiative to build a skilled healthcare workforce.

Education always wins with the Lottery, but so does the state’s economy. There are approximately 3,800 lottery retail partners in the Palmetto State. Since 2002, participating retailers have earned more than $730 million in lottery commissions – providing much needed assistance during a difficult economy.

And what about those who have played the Lottery and won? Lottery players have won more than $6.5 BILLION since 2002. The Education Lottery continuously reminds its players to remember lottery games are for entertainment and to please play responsibly.

What started with just four simple instant tickets has grown into a powerful funding source for education at all levels in South Carolina. Today, everyone knows someone who has received a lottery-funded scholarship, rented a DVD from the county library, watched a program on SCETV, taken the bus to school, or looked up something for a report on a computer paid for with lottery dollars. From the mountains to the sea, education has benefited, and continues to benefit, from the South Carolina Education Lottery.
