COLUMBIA, SC (July 19, 2012) – A Sumter couple about to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary has won $40,000 playing Mega Millions.
The wife has played her own numbers, a combination of family dates, on and off for years. Tuesday night she watched the drawing on television, and turned to her husband and calmly said, “I got every number but one.”
“How much did we win?” he asked.
She matched four white ball numbers and the Megaball® number to win $10,000 (1 - 13 - 21 - 49 - 55 MB: 17 / Megaplier: 4). Having paid the additional $1 for Megaplier®, her $10,000 winnings were multiplied to $40,000.
The winnings will come in handy on a trip the two are planning in celebration of their wedding anniversary. Their secret to 50 happy years together: “You have to make sure you have the right one,” said the wife, who married her high school sweetheart.
“You have to be willing to put up with each other,” added her husband.
For selling the claimed ticket, Kwik Mart in Sumter received a commission of $400.
Since the start of the Lottery in 2002, more than one million college scholarships and grants have been awarded to South Carolina’s students. In all, more than $2.8 BILLION has been transferred to support educational programs in the Palmetto State.
