Son Brings Mom Home $200,000 Lottery Ticket
11/22/2011 9:16:47 AM

COLUMBIA, SC (November 22, 2011) – A Gaston woman raised a good boy.

Her son was headed off to Spartanburg to work a construction job, and she asked him to get her two lottery tickets. He was taking a break at the Kangaroo Express #1509 at 2050 S. Pine St. in Spartanburg when he remembered the tickets. He bought his mom the tickets and scratched them in the store. He threw the first ticket away, but the second one was a keeper.

“I couldn’t even think when I saw all those zeros,” he told lottery officials. “I screamed, ‘She hit it! She won!’”

He called his mom back home in Gaston, where she was babysitting his kids, to tell her the news. She won $200,000.

“I told him I was lucky,” she said.

Once it started to sink in that her son was bringing her home a $200,000 lottery ticket, her nerves kicked in. She started shaking, felt sick at her stomach, and developed a headache.

The next day she arrived at the Lottery’s Columbia claims center to collect her winnings. At the counter she was still feeling anxious. She shared she had been laid off about a year ago. The winning grandmother raised three of her own children alone, sometimes working as many as three jobs at a time to support her family. Being out of work has been hard on her, but now the lottery winnings will get her through until she turns 62 in a few years.

“My son told me he would have never gotten that ticket if I hadn’t asked,” she said shaking her head in disbelief.

“This is crazy,” he said. “I’m so happy for my mom.”

As of this release, four top prizes of $200,000 remain in the $10 Winner Green game.

The odds of winning $200,000 are 1 in 428,571.43.

Kangaroo Express #1509 received a commission of $2,000 for selling the claimed ticket.
