Carolina Panther’s Fan Scores $100,000 Lottery Win

COLUMBIA, SC (November 8, 2011) – James Phillips shrugs off the grief he takes for sporting a Carolina Panther’s jersey. Although his team may not be fairing too well, Phillips is a winner.

Phillips, 27, won $100,000 playing the South Carolina Education Lottery. A true football fan, he can think of no better way to celebrate than treating himself to licensed seats at the Carolina Panther’s stadium. As for the rest of the winnings, he’s buying a house.

The Concord, NC, resident’s fortune changed following a day of raking leaves and installing gutters at his dad’s home in Indian Land. On the drive down, he bought a $5 Cold Hard Cash instant ticket. With the yard work done, he got the ticket out of the car and parked himself on his dad’s couch to relax and see what Lady Luck had in store.

“He looked like he saw a ghost,” laughed Phillips’ dad. “He finally stood up and started shaking.”

Phillips admits the ticket had his undivided attention. “I couldn’t stop looking at it,” he said.

He didn’t want to come alone to collect the winnings, so he waited a week until his dad and stepmom could come too.

“He’s taking us out to dinner,” said his stepmom, adding she contributed a dime to buy the ticket.

As of this release, three top prizes of $100,000 remain in the $5 Cold Hard Cash game.

The odds of winning $100,000 are 1 in 600,000.

Indian Land Amoco in Rock Hill received a commission of $1,000 for selling the claimed ticket.

Since the start of the Lottery in 2002, more than 932,000 college scholarships and grants have been awarded to South Carolina’s students. In all, more than $2.5 BILLION has been transferred to support educational programs in the Palmetto State.
